Three steps, no obligation

How your free estimates work

You never pay us, and asking is never a booking.

  1. Tell us about the move

Where you are leaving, where you are headed, roughly when, and how much there is. It takes a minute and needs no account.

  2. We make the calls

The 8 Top Movers moving team gets rates from the licensed movers in its network and asks each for a written estimate.

  3. You compare and choose

Read the estimates side by side. Pick one, or pick none. Nothing is booked until you say so, and you never pay us.

Moving from your state

Each state page lists its state pairs with road miles, a modelled delivery window and a modelled price.

What to check before you cross a state line

Things you can check yourself, with any mover, before you sign anything.

  • The mover’s USDOT number

A mover that carries your things across a state line needs federal operating authority. Look the number up on the FMCSA website before you pay a deposit.

  • Binding or non-binding

Ask which kind of estimate you are getting. It decides whether the total can change on moving day.

  • Valuation coverage

What the mover owes you if something is lost or broken, and what it costs to raise that to full value.

  • The delivery window

A long move arrives inside a window of days. Get the first and last date in writing.

  • Your new state’s license and registration rules

Each state sets its own deadlines for a new driver’s license and vehicle registration. Check its motor vehicle agency once you have a moving date.

  • Taxes on both sides of the line

Income tax, sales tax and cost of living can all change. Every state pair page lays them side by side.

State pairs, not city hops

Every page on this site is about moving between two US states, or out of one: a modelled cost, a modelled transit window and what changes across the state line. City-to-city costs, city guides and calculators are on Top Movers Hub, and long-haul city routes are on Top Cross Country Movers.

Questions people ask

Before you ask for estimates

Straight answers about state-to-state moves and how this site works.

What is Top Interstate Movers?

Top Interstate Movers is a free research site for moves between two US states. Each state-pair page shows a modelled cost range, a modelled transit window and what changes across the state line, such as income tax, sales tax and cost of living, for moves between the 50 states and DC. We are not a moving company and we do not book trucks.

How is this different from Top Movers Hub or Top Cross Country Movers?

Use this site when you are moving from one state to another. Top Movers Hub covers city-to-city costs under 500 miles, city guides and calculators. Top Cross Country Movers covers city-to-city routes of 500 miles or more. Estimate requests from all three sites go to the 8 Top Movers moving team.

Are the cost numbers on a state-pair page a quote?

No. They come from our own cost model: the distance, the typical volume for the home size and a season factor. Use them to budget and to check an estimate you already have. When you ask for estimates, the 8 Top Movers moving team gets rates from the licensed movers in its network and brings back written estimates. You never pay us, and asking is never a booking.

Do interstate movers need federal authority?

Yes. A mover that carries household goods across state lines needs a USDOT number and interstate operating authority from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Before you hire anyone, look the mover up on the FMCSA SAFER site and check its authority and the insurance it has on file.
